PLUMPTON PLACE
Decoration of a powder room in the historic Plumpton Place in East Sussex. Situated on a small island surrounded by a moat swimming with carp, Plumpton Place was built in 1568 on the site of an earlier house mentioned in the Domesday Book. The house was later renovated and extended by Sir Edwin Lutyens, with work on the grounds by Gertrude Jekyll. The house has been sensitively restored with natural materials reflecting its history and the surrounding landscape. Our brief was to envelope the power room in a stylised trompe l'oeil panelling, withfigurative and symbolic elements sitting within the frames. Whimsical scenes from local myth and folklore, including the Long Man of Wilmington and the Green Man, dance around the room and transport you to another place and time.
