Decoration of a children’s bedroom inspired by the Bemelman’s Bar in The Carlyle Hotel in New York.

Featured in FT How to Spend It

Ludwig Bemelmans was a 20th century Austrian-American illustrator best known for the Madeleine books. His playful decoration with its touch of irony appeals to both adults and children alike.

Painted in the 1940s , the bar has become an icon of New York life. We adopted Bemelman’s loose illustrative style, with some of Tess’s own whimsical additions - we hope he’d approve!
